Development Scrapped versions In 1999, producer said a Resident Evil sequel was in development for. Resident Evil 4 underwent a lengthy development, during which at least four versions of the game were discarded. The first version was directed. Around the turn of the millennium, Resident Evil 2 writer created a scenario for the game, based on Kamiya's idea to make a 'cool' and 'stylish'.

The story was based on unraveling the mystery surrounding the body of protagonist Tony, an invincible man with skills and an intellect exceeding that of normal people, with his superhuman abilities explained with biotechnology. As Kamiya felt the playable character did not look brave and heroic enough in battles from a fixed angle, he decided to drop the prerendered backgrounds from previous installments and instead opted for a. This new direction required the team to make a trip to Europe, where they spent 11 days in the United Kingdom and Spain, photographing things like statues, bricks, and stone pavements for use in. Though the developers tried to make the 'coolness' theme fit into the world of Resident Evil, Mikami felt it strayed too far from the series' roots and gradually convinced all of the staff members to make the game independent from it. Kamiya eventually rewrote the story to be set in a world full of demons and changed the hero's name to. The cast of characters remained largely identical to that in Sugimura's scenario, although the hero's mother and his father, the latter an early version of the founder Lord, were written out of the story.

The game's new title was revealed as, released for the PlayStation 2 in August 2001, resulting in.Development on Resident Evil 4 started over at the end of 2001. The first announcement was made in November 2002, as one of exclusively developed for the. Kennedy struggling to survive after having infiltrated the castle-like Umbrella's main headquarters located in Europe and featured traditional Resident Evil monsters such as. During the course of the new story which was again written by Sugimura's scenario creation company, Leon became infected with the Progenitor Virus and possessed a hidden power in his left hand. The producer of the final version also pointed out that Ashley did not appear back then, though there was a different girl who was never revealed to the public. The game was to feature some elements. This screenshot of a cancelled version depicts Leon fighting the hook man.

Though this earlier revision still used fixed camera angles while exploring environments, the battles already employed the over-the-shoulder view seen in the final build. At, another revision was revealed that is widely known as the 'hook man version' now, though titled Maboroshi no Biohazard 4 ( 幻の「バイオハザード4」, lit. 'The Phantom Biohazard 4') on the Biohazard 4 Secret DVD. During Mikami's introduction of the trailer, he assured that development was proceeding smoothly and claimed the game was scarier than ever before. The story was set in a haunted building where Leon contracted a bizarre disease and fought enemies, such as animated, living dolls, and a ghostlike man armed with a large hook.

The game had an otherworldly feel to it, containing elements like flashbacks and hallucinations that were marked by a bluish tint and a shaking camera. It also displayed various gameplay mechanics that carried over to the final release, like the over-the-shoulder camera and a laser sight for aiming in battles and quick time events. Other features, such as, were removed later. Though ultimately scrapped, five minutes of gameplay footage for this version was released on the Biohazard 4 Secret DVD, a Japanese bonus given out in January 2005.The Hallucination version had only a basic story concept, having dropped the previous scenario penned by Noboru Sugimura of Flagship. In 2012, scenario writer Yasuhisa Kawamura said he was responsible for this version, as he wanted to make Biohazard 4 scarier 'and suggested using a particular scene from the film, where the main character. suddenly finds herself in a derelict building with a killer on the loose.

An arranged version of this idea eventually turned into Hook Man. The idea went through several iterations as Mr. Sugimura and I carefully refined this world (which, I have to say, was very romantic). Leon infiltrates the castle of Spencer seeking the truth, while inside a laboratory located deep within, a young girl wakes up. Accompanied by a B.O.W.

an abbreviation for 'Bio Organic Weapon' in the series' lore dog, the two start to make their way up the castle. Unfortunately, there were many obstacles that needed to be overcome and the cost of development was deemed too expensive.'

Kawamura added he was very sorry and 'even ashamed' that Mikami had to step in and scrap this version. After this attempt, the last cancelled revision featured classic zombies again. However, it was discontinued after a few months, and before it was ever shown to the public, as the developers felt it was too formulaic. The story of the Progenitor Virus was eventually covered in and the Spencer Estate became the setting for Resident Evil 5 (DLC) pack 'Lost in Nightmares' (featuring Chris Redfield and ).Final version Following that, it was decided to reinvent the series.

Mikami took over directorial duties from Shibata and began working on the version that was released. In an interview with Game Informer, Mikami explained his decision to shift to a new gameplay system is due to the feeling that the older system is 'more of the same' after playing Resident Evil 0. He says that he only felt nervous once more when playing with the newer system.Speaking for the team, game producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi mentioned how the staff was 'tired of the same thing' and how some got bored and moved on to other projects. In addition to that, the producer also felt that the older format was 'stuck in a cookie cutter mold' and described it as 'shackles holding us down'.However, despite what Kobayashi said, not every single staff member was on the same page about changing the gameplay system. Kobayashi mentioned how some of the development team felt depressed and were hard to motivate after the focus shifted from horror to action.

Evil

Although Mikami demanded the camera system to be completely revised, the staff members had reservations about making big changes to the series he had created. Eventually, he intervened, explained his proposed changes, and wrote a new story that, unlike previous installments, was not centered on the company Umbrella. Inspired by, a game Mikami had enjoyed playing but felt could have been better with a different view, he decided to place the camera behind the playable character. To go along with the new gameplay and story, a new type of enemy called 'Ganado' was created, as opposed to using the undead creatures from previous Resident Evil games.

Furthermore, producers expended additional detail to modify and update characters that had previously appeared in the series. In a documentary explaining the conception of the characters, Kamiya stated he intended to make Leon Kennedy 'look tougher, but also cool'.The English recorded their parts in four sessions, over three to four months. Capcom assigned Shinsaku Ohara as script translator and voice over coordinator., who provided the voice for Ashley Graham, described her character as 'vulnerable, because Leon has to come to her rescue all the time'.

She also described Kennedy's character as 'more brawn, perhaps, than brain'. In addition to the voice acting, the game's designer detailed each cinematic sequence so that each character's facial expressions matched the tone of their voice actor.Along with and, two side story games that did not fall under the exclusive policy, it was announced on October 31, 2004 that Resident Evil 4 would come to the PlayStation 2 in 2005, citing increased profit, changing market conditions, and increased consumer satisfaction as the key reasons. Theylook and behave significantly less human than the village peasants;unlike the villagers who can walk, run, speak and carry out dailytasks normally, the Zealots seem more detached from the world, shuffling around, mumbling 'Muere, muere, muere' (Die, die, die)and 'Morir es vivir' (To die is to live). Their skin is much palerthan that of the villagers, and all of them appear to be bald.

Somehave crimson lesions or ritual scarification on their faces whileothers appear to have tattoos covering their faces. Island SoldiersThe soldiers are members of Saddler's mercenary organization, assigned to protect his island complex. They are generally betterequipped than other Ganados, and run faster.

They can be seencarrying stun rods, flails, wooden shields, RPGs, dynamite, crossbows, and bullet-proof helmets. A few burly soldiers carrymassive hammers and thick, bullet-proof metal armor, as well asthick pieces of metal literally welded to their faces. With theexception of J.J., no soldier carries a firearm. They too showabnormal behaviors, speaking mostly in deep, intimidating gruntsand growls. Colmillos.Colmillos ( fangs in Spanish) are wolves that have beenimplanted with the Las Plagas parasite. They act similarly to guarddogs for the Ganados. Players will meet both regular Comillos, which act like an over aggressive wolf, and Comillos with moredeveloped plagas as seen with gigantic flailing tentacles spurtingfrom their backs.

Colmillos generally appear to be more intelligentand aggressive in their attacks than Ganados because of theircomparatively greater agility. They attack by either having theirtentacles flail at victims or jumping onto victims and trying torip out their throat.

The Colmillos hunt in packs of two tofour. Novistador. The Novistador (which translates to unseen fromSpanish) is a giant human-sized insect-like creature that wascreated by experiments with los Ganados. This creature has theability to render itself invisible to the naked eye by changing thecolor of its exoskeleton. When invisible, Novistadors can bespotted by their glowing eyes, the ripples they emit while movingthrough water, their constant drooling, their breath (they oftenfight in cold areas) and their loud skittering noises. Novistadorsoften fight in packs of two to four and have wings upon theirbacks; often relying on them to move from wall to wall. They attackwith their claws and spit acid at their enemies. Most commonlyNovistadors employ sneak attacks where they spring upon victims whopass too close to their hiding spot.

Flying Novistadors can bekilled with one hit from any weapon. After being killed, Novistadoreyes may be sold to the merchant as gems. If they are killed whenthey have not detected the player, they drop the Blue Eye.

If theyare killed when they detect the player, they drop the Green Eye. Ifthey are killed while attacking, they drop the Red Eye. The valuesare (PS2 version): Blue 3000 pesetas, Red 1500 pesetas and Green1000 pesetas. Garrador. The garradors (from the Spanish word garra (meaningtalon); roughly translated to 'one with claws') are warriorspossessed by Las Plagas who wear equipment resembling those worn bygladiators. A garrador is equipped with large claws on each handthat can be extended and retracted at will (the blades will comeout if you make noise).

Garradors are very brutal creatures whowill indicriminately attack anyone and anything in it's path andare usually kept under strong restraint. These monsters arecompletely blind due to their sutured eyes, so they have to rely ontheir sense of hearing to track down enemies. Regenerator.A Regenerator is a mutated humanoid created from experimentswith Las Plagas and human specimens: according to the notes of LuisSera, they are the most 'clearly distinguishable' creatures bornfrom Saddler's experiments. They can regenerate lost body parts ina matter of seconds, and are extremely resistant to direct damage, but are unable to live without the leech-shaped Plagas whichinhabit them, which are only visible using thermal imagingequipment. When a Regenerator has lost all inhabiting Plagas itstissue will begin to expand rapidly and will explode, leaving onlyits legs. The Regenerators can stretch their limbs to reach opponents, pull them in, and bite them with their sharp teeth. They alsodemonstrate the ability to slither on the ground at impressivespeeds after one of their legs has been shot off, and theirslithering movement is in fact faster than their normally walking. They can also leap from a prone position. The Regenerator can range from having two to five parasitesdepending on difficulty level and location encountered. InProfessional Mode all Regenerators have a fifth parasite on theirback.

Iron Maiden. An Iron Maiden is a variation of the Regenerator with the addedability to generate sharp spikes from its skin. They are able tostretch their arms, latch onto their targets and cause devastatingdamage by embracing and impaling them on their spikes. They have aslightly slower gait than the Regenerators; on the other hand, theycan crawl much faster than normal Regenerators.

They also have novisible eyes, while the Regenerators each have a pair of glowingred eyes. Iron Maidens also have considerably higher stamina thanthe Regenerators, as they contain more parasites. Del LagoDel Lago (which means literally 'of the lake' or 'from thelake') is a massive aquatic creature that lives in a lake near thevillage. The creature was awakened from its slumber by Saddlerafter Leon's arrival. Leon encounters the creature as he tries tocross the lake in a boat. El GiganteEl Gigante ( the giant in Spanish), ormore accurately Los Gigantes because there are more than one, areenormous human-like brutes who know nothing but destruction.Gigantes come from experiments with Los Ganados and Las Plagas, resulting in a large grotesque monster infested by plagas. They areoften tied up (as seen in the village) or kept in enclosed placeswhere they cannot wreak havoc.

In the Castle, Leon faces some thathave been equipped with armor and chains. These are some of themost durable enemies Leon faces in the game, being maybe five timestaller than himself and having an extreme amount of health (onerocket shot).

They often attack simply by trying to squish theirvictims and in some cases throwing or swinging objects likeboulders and trees. Three methods exist to kill a Gigante: 1)getting shot a ton, 2) slicing the plagas on its back, and 3)defeating it with environment objects like boulders or moltenpits. Verdugo. The Verdugo (Executioner) are the bodyguards of Ramon Salazar.Underneath the robes are humanoid creatures, with insectoidexoskeletons, long tails which sport sharp sickle-like blades, which are used for surprise attacks. The Verdugo's exoskeleton isalmost completely bullet-proof, but is weakened by exposure toliquid nitrogen, and while frozen it is more vulnerable to weaponsfire and explosives, and will be shattered into pieces if hit withsufficient force. The Verdugo possesses keen agility and exceptionalcombat capabilities. The second Verdugo merges with Salazar, along with a mutatedplant. This Verdugo forms the large snake-like head of the mergedentity.

U3.The U3 was created by splicing genes from reptiles, insects anda human into one organism. It goes after it's prey with umatchedagility. The U3 is fought in two stages. Intially it's a centaurcreature with one tentacle arm a distende, bisected mandible and anenlarged tongue, Leon's weapons are only used to drive off themonster temporarily so as to freely move about in a maze ofshipping containers in large suspended cages. Partway through thissequence, an enormous worm-like Plaga erupts from the creature'sback and attacks with enlarged, scissor-like jaws. The eruptedPlaga is the U3's weak point, as it is more vulnerable to damagethan its host.

Later on, on solid ground, Leon finally manages tokill the U3. There the U3 shows its ability to dive underground andburst out, sometimes slicing the player in two.

Jack Krauser(Transformed). Jack Krauser's Transformation.Jack Krauser is the mercenary who kidnapped Ashley for Saddler. After he transforms, he uses his massive arm as both a weapon and ashield. The only way to damage Krauser is to attack his legs or toattack right before he does. Leon engages Krauser in a knife fightin an abandoned warehouse on the island, and then in a final fightamong ruins on the island. StrategiesSurprisingly, the best way to kill him is by using theknife.Alternately, The Chicago Typewriter (which will not be availableuntil a second playthrough) also works wonders, at least duringAda's fight with him at the end of Separate Ways, as it is possibleto take him down in less than thirty seconds by just constantlybombarding him with bullets.

Right before he can do a melee attack,he has to pull away the arm that he normally uses as a shield toblock bullets, leaving him briefly vulnerable for about a half asecond to incoming fire. This causes him to flinch, and kneel onthe ground (like what happens when knifing him), canceling theimpending melee attack he was about to make. The TMP, being weaker, and not having infinite ammo, can also possibly work for attemptingthe same strategy, as long as one's TMP ammo holds out. Barringhaving the TMP ammo or Chicago Typewriter for attempting to bombardKrauser with automatic fire, using the knife is the bestway to take out Krauser, and probably the only way to successfullydo so within the time limit Leon faces when fighting him.

Bitores Mendez Transformed.Although encountered only in cut scenes earlier in thegame(trying to strangle Leon in all of them), this 'Transformed'Bitores Mendez is a very deadly opponent. His main attacks includea lunging attack with the two scythe-like arms on his back, and achoking attack with his two main arms. Also, after enough damagehas been done to Bitores, the top half of his body will separatefrom the bottom half making the battle even more difficult. Thebest strategy with this boss is to unload on him whenever you get achance, avoiding his attacks, moving away and unloading on himagain. Incendiary grenades will make short work of his firstform.
